New Painting “Midnight Ballet”

“Midnight Ballet” Wildlife Art by: Laura Curtin

Wildlife Art by: Laura CurtinBlue skies, butterflies and Alpacas, all of these themes are beautiful by themselves but together?  A strange mix of fur, fun and fantasy.

I had fun in mind when I started this painting.  A friend gave me a great photo he took of a camel while visiting India and I wanted to paint it.  I didn’t want to paint just one camel so I began searching photo reference sites for more camel photos. In the process of searching I saw photos of all these furry funny faced Llamas and Alpacas.  My focus for the painting shifted and I decided that Alpacas were the cutest member of the Camel family.   I found three furry friends and made them the stars of my midnight blue painting.

My mom had a midnight blue corvette convertible and I loved that car.  The sound of that name, “Midnight Blue”, makes me think of fast cars and the night stars which makes me think of my mom.  Going along with my theme of fun and beauty for this painting the background became a dramatic electric blue.

Adding to the fun are free flying colorful Monarch butterflies.  I wanted to fill this painting up with beautiful stained glass butterflies. These little Ballerinas took over just the side of the painting, inviting the Alpacas to play, maybe join in the dance.

This painting is really all about things I like, soft fur, a sky that reminds me of my mom and the ability to fly away on the wind. I hope you enjoy this painting anyway it touches you. Click the image to enlarge.

I think your site is wonderful and inspiring. The graphics are absolutely stunning and site is very “eye-catching”! Is the Alpaca and Butterfly painting or prints available? If so, please let me know the price by e-mail. Thank you and blessings, KC

Thank you Bette’ The name was my idea. I really loved all the suggestions. I knew the name had to be something about the Midnight Blue but the ballet part came to me after the little butterflies appeared.

There is so much detail in painting the fur.
You must have painted it so painstakingly. :)

Thank you Evgenia.I do put quite the effort in painting the fur. I use a process of under painting first, re-enforcing the darks and lights and then some single hairs on top. I like the way these guys turned out looking so fluffy.
