The Eagle, majestic bird of prey, symbolic inspiration to artists, religions and organizations. I began searching for eagle reference materials at my brothers book store early in December of 2012. There are so many photos, drawings, paintings and writings about eagles. I was confronted with countless artistic possibilities of eagles living in the natural world. My brain was overwhelmed with scenes of eagles, soaring, hunting, mating, tending their young on cliffs or in trees. The photo reference materials were so beautiful I wondered why I thought I could paint something as wonderful as the photos.
I am an artist, I have an ego and a positive attitude so I listened to the stories coming alive in my head. I looked at hundreds of photos of large groups of eagles congregating along the shores of Alaska. My interest finally settled on the photos of birds resting or waiting in trees. I noticed many of the photos of the birds were taken from below them looking up. I thought I wanted to be on eye level with the eagles but still up in the tree. I decided to paint beautiful blue skies, snowy branches and give the feeling of being high off the ground.
I love the eagles that ended up in my painting, majestic, silly and intense. I love that the sky is so blue and the clouds are so white. I am happy that the tree branches are under the eagles but the painting still seems balanced. At the end of painting I put snow blowing off the branches that are above and unseen by the viewer. I kind of wish I would have been a little more heavy handed with the snow but it is what it is. I hope you enjoy my new painting “Eagles, Warming in the Sun”
